William Blount was the first territorial governor of (1790–96) and later one of the first two U.S. senators from Tennessee (1796–97). Blount served in the North Carolina militia during the Revolutionary War.

When William Blount returned to civilian life, he devoted himself to politics and public service—and to aggressive land speculation. As a member of the North Carolina elite, he was elected to the state’s legislature in 1781 and remained in that body for most of the decade.
