Sway Bar Failures Are Causing Serious Accidents On The Highway

The square nut for the sway-bar bushing mount is recessed into the frame, and held in place by four tack welds. Judging by the amount I have read on failures of this exact part, this is a common area of trouble, as the welds brake, and nut is able to spin free in the frame.

The sway bar light started blinking but would not turn solid. I went back and forth in the Jeep a few times but it never seemed to lock in. Today I took off the plug and sprayed both the plug and connector with contact cleaner even though there was no sign of corrosion. That didn't fix it. So I removed the motor/position sensor.

The sway bar will do what it is supposed to, regardless--rotate across its length when the axle moves evenly, twist as each end moves in opposite ways, and changing its rotation angle won't alter that.

I measured my sway bar bushing using 3 methods on AutoRock for verification and the diameter on my sway bar is 29mm ish. I bought a new sway bar bushing 29mm-30mm for replacement and after installation, there is a gap in the new sway bar bushing. Is it supposed to be like that or should be no gap at all?

I reinstalled the sway bar immediately after that drive, it's just not worth the risk on the highway and my truck has a 3" lift which probably makes the sway worse. As a weekend off-road use vehicle, for me it was not worth it since I still do a lot of city/highway driving.

A sway bar is usually a torsion spring that resists body roll motions. It is usually constructed out of a cylindrical steel bar, formed into a "U" shape, that connects to the body at two points, and at the left and right sides of the suspension.

Vehicle based trailer sway control is typically programming built into the Vehicle Stabilty Control (VSC) System that attempts to use the vehicle brakes and engine power management to counteract trailer sway. The Tacoma being such a light truck probably wouldn't see much benefit from it but it is there.
