For most species, mating is between two individuals of opposite sexes; however, for hermaphroditic species, copulation is not required because the parent organism is capable of self-fertilization (autogamy).
Accordingly, mating is one of the most heavily studied areas in the biological and social sciences. Recent theoretical and empirical findings in human mating research have identified key sex differences in mate preferences, as well as neural and hormonal correlates of mating.
As psychology and science see it, mating is the entire repertoire of behaviors that animals—including humans—engage in the pursuit of finding a partner for intimacy or reproduction.
There are many ideas about human mating systems, varying from culture to culture. While some cultures hold the ideal that monogamy is the best mating system for humans, others strictly believe in polygyny, while others yet practice polyandry or promiscuity within their culture.
Across cultures, human mating systems exist on a spectrum including social monogamy, polygyny (one man, multiple women), and polyandry (one woman, multiple men). The pair-bond itself is a ubiquitous feature, most commonly expressed as serial monogamy in modern societies.
Commonalities, however, can be found between humans and nonhuman animals in mating behavior, as in the case of animal sexual behavior in general and assortative mating in particular. Human mating strategies also affect and are affected by sexuality, religion, culture, politics, and economics.
Mating system A mating system is a way in which a group is structured in relation to sexual behaviour. The precise meaning depends upon the context. With respect to animals, the term describes which males and females mate under which circumstances.
