Category:Reger, Max Max Reger (19 March 1873 — 11 May 1916) = Alternative Names/Transliterations: Johann Baptist Joseph Maximilian Reger

Max Reger was a German composer and teacher noted for his organ works, which use Baroque forms. He was one of the last composers to infuse life into 19th-century musical traditions.

Reger was particularly known for his organ music, often considered some of the most challenging in the repertoire. His Fantasie and Fugue on B-A-C-H, Op. 46, is one of his most famous organ works, paying homage to Bach.

Reger took piano and organ lessons in his teens. His ambition to become a composer began in 1888, the result of hearing Wagner’s Die Meistersinger and Parsifal at Bayreuth.

Reger was deeply connected to the German musical tradition, maintaining relationships with composers (Bach, Brahms, Strauss), conductors (Straube, Busch), performers (Szigeti), institutions (Leipzig Conservatory, Meiningen Court Orchestra), and patrons (King Georg II, Elsa Reger).

Many of Reger’s famous works are sets of variations. His Orchestral Variations and Fugue on a theme by J. A. Hiller, op.100 (1907) and Mozart Variations op.132 (1914) are admired for their ingenuity. Both can be regarded as worthy successors to the Haydn Variations of Brahms.
