Both the words "skeptical" and "cynical" refer to a doubtful mood, but what is the basic difference between them?

The earliest occurrence of sceptical (or skeptical) that I've been able to find in an English dictionary is in Edward Phillips, The New World of English Words, or a Generall Dictionary (1658): Sceptical, (Greek) contemplative, whence Scepticks are a sort of Philosophers who onely consider and contemplate of things without determining any thing.

So almost always the right answer is either of skeptical of or skeptical about, but other possibilities may exist depending on the broader context and personal predilections.

My personal understanding is that cynicism is being skeptical of another person's motives. "Mocking; contemptuous" seems to suggest a more attacking tone. To me, this definition suggests that cynical and contemptuous can be used interchangeably, which I do not think is correct from the examples I have seen, as well as from daily interactions.

Note that this word can be applied both to the person who suspects something and to the person or thing that they suspect. Another, perhaps less confrontational, way to describe this person skeptical, which is defined by Merriam-Webster "as having or expressing doubt about something (such as a claim or statement)".
