This is how JFK and EWR work. Gatwick has arguably better national rail connectivity than Heathrow - sits right on Southern/Thameslink, simple interchange at Clapham Junction for South Western, wouldn't require too much work to run an Ashford - Gatwick service to cover much of Kent; straight down the Thameslink for all of the northern terminals.
And coming through Elephant on the Thameslink train has become a rather dizzying experience with all the additional high-rises and with this it's just going to get better.
